I booted up Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch for a nostalgia trip and quickly remembered why the early games felt like a test of patience more than a warm walk through Kanto. Modern Pokemon often hand you powerful or guaranteed Legendaries with conveniences to match. Gen 3 refuses to be that helpful.

My plan and how Articuno ruined it

I picked Bulbasaur and kept it as a Modest special attacker to help with the Gen 3 battle math before the Physical/Special split in Gen 4. I beat Blaine on Cinnabar and decided to swing by Seafoam Islands to nab Articuno before dealing with Giovanni's Ground Types at Viridian City. That is where reality checked my enthusiasm.

Why Gen 3 Legendaries feel unfair

Legendaries in FireRed and LeafGreen have some of the lowest catch rates in the series. The base chance per regular Pokè Ball can be as low as 0.4 percent without any bonuses. Even with ideal modifiersstatus like Sleep, Paralysis, or Freeze and bringing the target to 1 HPan Ultra Ball only nets a maximum catch probability around 4.366 percent for a Pokemon such as Articuno.

Practically that means throwing Ultra Ball after Ultra Ball and then resetting the game when the Ultra Balls run out. Modern titles make this easier. For example, Eternatus in Sword and Shield had a 100 percent catch rate in its encounter. Newer games also give more ball options like Timer Balls and Dusk Balls to meaningfully shift odds. FireRed and LeafGreen do not. You get Poke Balls, Great Balls, Ultra Balls, one Master Ball, and the Safari Ball limited to the Safari Zone. No Timer Ball, no Dusk Ball, no mercy.

What the Switch rerelease adds

The Switch versions make some previously event-exclusive content available. The Mystic Ticket is included so players can access Lugia and Ho-oh at Navel Rock, and the Aurora Ticket opens Birth Island to catch Deoxys. You still have to deal with Gen 3 catch math, but at least you can try for these Pokemon without needing a long-ago event card.

Why this old-school difficulty actually matters

After getting slapped by Articuno's catch odds, I found myself appreciating the challenge. Modern conveniences take the sting out of capturing Legendaries. It is easier to miss the thrill when a Legendary practically hops into your party. FireRed and LeafGreen force a return to tense encounters where success depends more on luck and careful planning than clicking a guaranteed ball option.

So if you want to feel like a Pokemon trainer who earned a legendary through persistence rather than convenience, replaying FireRed or LeafGreen on Switch will remind you why those early games had a special kind of pressure. Just bring extra Ultra Balls and a calm attitude for repeated resets.
