Incident at Shama

This afternoon, a rocket of still-unconfirmed origin struck the Shama base in southern Lebanon, which serves as the headquarters of the Italian contingent and Unifil’s Western sector.

No Italian military personnel were injured. The only damage reported was minor harm to the base’s infrastructure, which is an encouraging result in a part of the world where even small explosions tend to arrive with bad timing.

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has been in contact with the Chief of Defence Staff, the commander of Covi and the commander of the Italian contingent to receive regular updates on the situation and on the condition of the personnel.

The origin of the rocket is still being investigated.
