Joint statement from Europe, the EU, and Canada
Emmanuel Macron, Giorgia Meloni, Friedrich Merz, Keir Starmer, Mette Frederiksen, Jens Jetten, Pedro Sanchez, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a joint statement that their governments “will contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”
The same leaders also called on all sides to implement the ceasefire, “including in Lebanon.”
Following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire, the heads of government and EU institutions said the goal now must be to negotiate a swift and lasting end to the war in the coming days. That, they said, can only be achieved through diplomatic means.
They added that they “strongly encourage rapid progress toward a substantial negotiated solution.” According to the statement, that would be crucial to protect civilians in Iran and to maintain security across the region. It could also help avert a serious global energy crisis.
“We support these diplomatic efforts,” the leaders said, adding that they are in close contact with the United States and other partners.
