Homelander’s final-season headache may be self-inflicted
The Boys is heading into its fifth and final season, and the cast says the biggest threat to Homelander is not Billy Butcher, despite all the usual blood feud energy. According to the show’s actors, the real problem may be Sister Sage, who looks less like a loyal ally and more like someone quietly arranging the furniture before the house burns down.
That matters because the show is ending with Homelander at his most dangerous. Butcher and the rest of The Boys still want to stop Vought International from letting superheroes do whatever they want, but Homelander remains their central target because he is dead set on becoming the most powerful man in the world. Season 4 left the team badly exposed: some of them ended up in prison thanks to Vought, and Homelander responded by imposing martial law across the country while other supes operated like soldiers.
Sister Sage has no real fear of Homelander
Susan Heyward, who plays Sister Sage, told ScreenRant that her character is unusually calm around Homelander because she is not playing from a place of fear.
She said, “Well, I think one of the fun things about playing Sister Sage is the lack of fear for Homelander. Of course, the mortal desire to stay alive is in there somewhere, but when we find her at the beginning of Season 4, she’s kind of signed off of life.
“She’s kind of signed off of risk. So she kind of has nothing to lose. She’s finally in the game of power. And she has absolutely nothing to lose. Worst comes to worst, he lasers her head,” she continued.
“Okay. I really do think part of her calm heartbeat is knowing that she has a plan and knowing what she wants and knowing that she’s already gone farther than anyone else would’ve given her the opportunity to. So let’s see what happens.”
Colbie Minifie, who plays Ashley Barrett, backed up that read on Sage’s mindset with a line that is both funny and mildly alarming, which is very much on brand for this show. “It’s also like when you have the long line of history in your head at all times, it’s like, ‘Oh. It’s fine.’”
Why Sister Sage is the bigger wild card
Fans will remember that Sister Sage was introduced in Season 4 as the smartest person on Earth. She quickly used that intelligence to climb to the top, eventually becoming the new CEO of Vought International. Her first phase of scheming also helped change the country’s political leadership, which gave Homelander room to push the United States into a kind of superhero-policed state.
What comes next is still unclear, but the show has already made it obvious that Sage is not done. If Phase 1 reshaped the presidency, then Phase 2 is presumably aiming larger. Because of course it is.
Her long-term plotting also stretched into the Gen V spinoff, where Project Odessa at Godolkin University became part of the larger game. She was also manipulating Cipher, played by Hamish Linklater/Ethan Slater, while Marie Moreau, played by Jaz Sinclair, has emerged as a possible counterweight. Marie is now seen as a weapon capable of bringing Homelander down because she is just as powerful as he is.
Final season release date
The Boys Season 5 premieres on Prime Video on April 8, 2026. Until then, the show’s final stretch seems to be setting up a familiar problem for Homelander: the people around him may be just as dangerous as the enemies trying to kill him.
