Street Fighter 6’s new framing of Alex’s backstory stirred up a lot of noise, and director Takayuki Nakayama stepped in to calm things down. Fans were upset to see a beloved character presented as marrying someone who was shown to be both his adoptive sister and his second cousin.

What changed from older games

In earlier entries, Alex was introduced as a found-family type. After his parents died he was taken in by a man named Tom, who was related to Alex’s mother. Tom raised Alex along with his own daughter, Patricia. The two played the role of siblings.

Street Fighter 6 paints that history differently in some places. World Tour images show a young Alex holding baby Patricia, talking about wanting to be strong to protect her. Later art shows the two at a wedding. The game’s Arcade story then includes a scene where Patricia is pregnant with Alex’s child and Alex reacts to a kick from her belly.

Why fans reacted

Many Western players reacted strongly because the setup implies a romantic relationship that began between people who were raised like siblings and are also second cousins. In some cultures that combination is especially uncomfortable, and for many players it crossed a line.

Capcom’s response

"We apologize for any confusion that recent topics regarding Alex's story may have caused," Nakayama wrote. He added that the core character backstories have not been changed but that the development team plans to revise text passages that may have been misleading.

The scenario team also provided a short supplementary piece titled A Toast Between Fathers. That story shows Tom talking after the wedding and explains that Alex pulled away in high school, then returned after an incident where he rescued Patricia from a group of attackers. The short story positions their later romance as something that grew after they were adults and after a period of separation.

Fan reactions and the road ahead

  • Some players accepted the explanation and appreciated the clarification.
  • Others remain uncomfortable and say the jump from protective sibling figure to romantic partner does not sit well with them.
  • Suggestions ranged from changing relationships in the text to treating Alex as an uncle figure instead.

For now the discussion is ongoing and emotions are mixed. The development team says it will tweak wording to reduce confusion. Fans will be watching closely, especially as the game prepares new content, including the next DLC character due in summer 2026.
