Raven Software stepped into the comments and answered two of the biggest gripes about the new Warzone Black Ops Royale mode: why you can only roll in quads, and why your sweet weapon camos are nowhere to be seen. Spoiler: it is not a plot to make you buy more skins. Probably.

One squad size at launch (aka quads, for now)

Raven explained that Black Ops Royale is a fresh beast and the team wanted to start simple. They picked the squad size that has historically been the most popular across other Call of Duty modes, launched with that, and said they want to study how the core experience lands before adding other squad options.

Translation: they want the game to not explode first, then add the fun stuff later. Fair. Also practical. Also the kind of thing developers say when they have to pick between shipping and perfection.

The community reaction was predictable. Some players pointed out that not everyone has three friends on speed dial, and random teammates can be a delight or a disaster. Complaints included:

  • No full party? You get random teammates and all the chaos that brings.
  • No mic, different languages, or wildly different playstyles can make quads feel like group therapy with guns.
  • Smaller squads (duos, trios) are a real playstyle for many people and their absence stings.

Raven says they are listening and will continue the conversation. So if you miss duos, shout into the void in a polite way and hope the void answers.

Weapon skins are off the menu at launch (but not forever)

Yes, your camos and blueprints are MIA. Raven says building the mode was a massive cross-team effort and hooking up the full cosmetic system takes a lot of development time. They prioritized getting the core gameplay stable over plugging in every weapon skin right away.

That decision split opinions. Some creators and players argued that modern Call of Duty is built around camo hunting and flashy blueprints, and removing that motivation could make people skip the new mode. Others were chill and said they would rather have a polished, fun game without camos than a glitchy mode with full cosmetics.

Bottom line: skins are parked, not deleted. Raven made it clear they may add cosmetic support later, once the mode’s foundation is solid.

What this means for you

If you prefer a tidy, well-running match and can tolerate temporarily losing your gun bling, you’ll probably be okay. If you live for camo challenges or only like playing with a duo buddy, you might grumble until more squad options and cosmetic support arrive.

Raven’s approach is cautious and reasonable: make the mode work first, then add the flavor. Annoying in the short term, maybe wise in the long term. Keep your patience and your complaints ready.
