Vance turns up the pressure
JD Vance has warned Iran to take the newly announced ceasefire seriously, after the two sides agreed to a two-week pause in fighting.
On Tuesday, 7 April, Donald Trump said attacks would be temporarily halted after Iran agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a development that, naturally, came with plenty of room for things to go wrong.
Speaking at an election rally in Hungary on Wednesday, 8 April, in support of Viktor Orban, Vance addressed Iran’s response to what he called a “fragile” truce.
He said some Iranians had “responded very favourably”, while others were “lying about the nature of the ceasefire”.
Vance urged Iran to work with the US to bring the war to an end. If they do not “negotiate in good faith”, he said, they will learn that Trump is “not one to mess around with”.
