ICC moves against Italy
The International Criminal Court has formally referred Italy to the Assembly of States Parties for failing to cooperate in the Almasri case. The court announced the move in a statement, confirming what had already emerged on 26 January. Because apparently even international justice likes to put things in writing twice.
"On 29 January 2026, the Presidency of the Court transmitted to the President of the Assembly of States Parties the decision, dated 26 January, to refer Italy for non-compliance with a request for cooperation," the note said.
The statement also retraced the key steps in the case.
A representative of Italy was invited yesterday to attend a meeting of the Assembly Bureau to discuss the implications of the decision and to explain how Rome intends to ensure future cooperation with the court. The Bureau will then present a report on the actions taken, along with any recommendations, at the Assembly's next session.
