Long silence, now a documentary

Remember when Duffy's voice was everywhere thanks to "Mercy" in 2008? She then vanished from the spotlight. Now she has agreed to let Disney+ tell her story in a feature-length documentary. The project was announced at Series Mania by Angela Jain, head of content for Disney+ in EMEA.

What Duffy revealed before

In 2020 Duffy wrote a public post explaining why she stepped away from music in 2011. She said she had been kidnapped and raped. Later she published a longer, roughly 3,000-word account on her own site describing being drugged on her birthday at a restaurant, kept drugged for about four weeks and taken to another country. She wrote that her attacker made comments that suggested he might kill her.

Why this documentary matters

According to Jain, Duffy "disappeared off the face of the earth" and has not discussed those years publicly beyond that earlier post. The singer has entrusted Disney+ with her story. Jain said the team recognizes the responsibility to handle this material with care and sensitivity because Duffy will be speaking about what happened for the first time on camera.

Production and context

  • Production on the documentary is due to begin soon.
  • The film is described as feature-length and will focus on the period Duffy spent away from music as well as the assault and kidnapping she later revealed.
  • Disney+ executives emphasize careful and sensitive treatment of the subject.

Duffy's words and what comes next

In her written account Duffy said she initially did not feel safe going to the police because she feared for her life. She later did report the crime, and said she has felt terrified since then. On the question of returning to music, she wrote, "I'm doing this to be freed, for all of me to be freed. What follows remains to be seen."

This documentary will be the first time Duffy speaks about those events on camera. Fans and observers will be watching to see how the film handles a painful and personal story, and whether it leads to a new chapter in her life and career.
