Lewis Hamilton is showing signs of life after a rough patch, according to 1996 world champion Damon Hill. The seven-time champion picked up his first podium for Ferrari in China, finishing third behind the two Mercedes drivers, and team and observers say the change in car behavior has helped.
Hill sees a different Hamilton
Hill told a podcast that Hamilton appears revitalized. He says Hamilton went through a low period, worked on himself, and now seems lighter and more confident. Part of the improvement, Hill noted, comes from Hamilton finally having a car he can use to its full potential under the 2026 technical rules.
Why the new rules matter
The 2026 cars are built under a fresh set of regulations, and the way they generate downforce and grip is different from the previous generation. Hill pointed out that this year’s balance lets drivers explore the car’s limits more comfortably, and Hamilton seems to be making the most of that.
Herbert agrees: aggression is back
Johnny Herbert, Hill’s co-host, added that Hamilton feels able to drive more aggressively now. With the older ground effect cars, pushing to the limit could cause sudden loss of control, and Hamilton struggled with that. The new cars, Herbert says, have allowed him to adapt and attack corners more confidently.
Where others stand
Herbert also noted that Charles Leclerc adapted differently. Leclerc had been more at ease with the ground effect generation, but he remains closely matched with Hamilton under the new rules, so the on-track battle looks set to stay interesting.
