Hot on the heels of Marathon's launch, Bungie is already rolling out competitive vibes. Not a full-blown esport yet, but definitely a flashy streamer party. The Tau Ceti Cup lands on Saturday, March 14 and pits famous content creators against each other in a one-day showmatch.

So is this an esport? Sort of, but mostly a showmatch

Marathon does have ranked modes and a competitive backbone, but the Tau Ceti Cup is not trying to crown a world champion. Think less stadium final, more prime-time streamer event. It is designed to spotlight big creators, drive hype, and hand out some very stylish rewards.

The teams

Six creator teams will compete. Yes, some names probably make you do a double-take, and yes, they all bring drama and skill in roughly equal measure.

What's at stake

The victorious team will score custom-made Marathon jackets crafted by Australian cosplayer Vamprea. Viewers are not left out either. The event hands out Twitch drop rewards so people watching can grab in-game goodies.

Bungie is also running a separate invite-only Marathon Australia Invitational for Aussie creators. The winners there receive the same custom jackets plus the game collector's edition.

Twitch drops and how to grab them

Yes, there are three Angry Bunny-themed drops up for grabs during the event. They unlock the more you watch.

  • Watch 1 hour: Angry Bunny profile emblem
  • Watch 2 hours: Angry Bunny profile background
  • Watch 3 hours: Angry Bunny weapon sticker

How to claim them:

  • Link your Bungie.net account to your Twitch account.
  • Watch a Marathon stream from one of the competing creators during the event in the Marathon Twitch directory with Drops enabled.
  • Claim the rewards from your Twitch Inventory, then log into Marathon to receive them in-game.

The drops are active during the March 14 broadcast window. Check local times for when your favorite streamer is live.

Quick reality check

This is a hype-focused showmatch, not the start of a formal pro circuit. But if Marathon keeps fans engaged and creators keep turning up, a proper esports scene could still happen. For now, the Tau Ceti Cup is a perfect chance to watch skilled players, grab some silly cosmetics, and enjoy a solid dose of streamer chaos.
