Brian Cox is the New York Ripper
Dexter Resurrection has finally named the actor behind one of Season 1’s most persistent mysteries. On April 2, the show’s social accounts revealed that 79-year-old Brian Cox will play the New York Ripper in Season 2.
That is a fairly direct answer to a question the series spent the first season carefully feeding. The Ripper was mentioned repeatedly throughout the run, including through references to a weapon tied to Leon Prater’s collection. The killer had supposedly been inactive for years, but the show also revealed that he never really stopped at all. Instead, he kept his victims unnerved with disturbing phone calls. Because apparently a serial killer cannot simply disappear quietly when a plot thread is available.
The case also remains important to Detective Claudette Wallace, who was the first person assigned to track the Ripper down.
The finale left a trail of clues
In the season finale, Dexter kills Prater, takes files connected to other killers, and leaves the NYPD a dossier on the New York Ripper. Those documents identify the suspect as “Don Framt”, although the show has not confirmed whether that is his actual name.
Now we know the face attached to the role, but not necessarily the whole story. The casting announcement may have settled one mystery while carefully preserving another, which is very on-brand for a show that makes a living out of hiding the obvious in plain sight.
Fan theories have officially been dealt a blow
Before Cox’s casting was announced, viewers had come up with a long list of possibilities for the Ripper’s identity. Suggestions ranged from UrCar driver Blessing to Jonah Mitchell, the son of the Trinity Killer.
Other theories were even more ambitious. Some fans suspected Dexter’s stepson Cody, a character who has not appeared in years. Others pointed to Detective Wallace’s partner Melvin Olvia or Harrison’s new girlfriend Gigi. And yes, some viewers even expected the role to go to Bryan Cranston, because apparently if a mystery is open long enough, every actor with a first name beginning with B eventually enters the chat.
There is still a chance that Cox’s casting is meant to mislead. Television does enjoy a last-minute detour. But for now, the internet’s favorite pastime of turning every supporting character into a hidden murderer looks to be on life support.
Clyde Phillips says Season 2 will have a bigger structure
Showrunner Clyde Phillips previously addressed the New York Ripper theories on the Dissecting Dexter Podcast, calling out the speculation around Cody, Gigi, and Olvia in particular.
“I’m not to say if anything is right. I’m just saying it’s a delicious opportunity for us when we get into the writing room to make it feel more real and less theoretical,” he said.
Phillips also said Season 2 will have a central villain, in this case the Ripper, while still using a villain-of-the-week approach alongside that main threat.
“We’ve got a great big bad for next season and some other what we call little bads, you know, the weekly bads.”
Dexter Resurrection Season 2 is currently planned for release in October 2026.
