A new distance record for human spaceflight

Four astronauts on NASA’s Artemis II mission have officially become the farthest-traveling humans from Earth, setting a new record in the process.

The previous mark, 400,171 kilometers, was set by Apollo 13 in April 1970. That record stood for more than five decades, which is a respectable run by any standard, especially in spaceflight.

The milestone was paired with a reminder to appreciate the moment. “It’s a historic day… but don’t forget to enjoy the view.”

Artemis II’s new place in the record books adds another notable line to NASA’s latest lunar program, even before the mission has finished writing its story.
