For audiences already debating what a faithful Homer adaptation should look like, another contender has entered the arena without a screenplay, crew or visible production. Elon Musk said on July 22 that an AI Odyssey made with Grok Imagine would arrive before the end of 2026, promising a full-length film that is both “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.”
The announcement followed the release of Christopher Nolan’s theatrical adaptation, which opened July 17 to strong ticket sales and a familiar argument over fidelity. Nolan has emphasized practical spectacle and emotional accessibility. Musk, by contrast, is offering artificial intelligence and historical reconstruction. Only one of those projects currently exists as a finished movie.
What has Elon Musk actually promised?
Musk made the pledge after reposting a three-minute, user-created sequence based on Homer’s poem and generated with Grok. He wrote: “Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.”
Variety and the Daily Beast both reported the statement, but neither found evidence that production had started. Since the announcement, Musk and xAI have not disclosed several details normally associated with a feature film:
- A screenplay or credited writer
- A director or production team
- A planned runtime
- A distributor or streaming platform
- A release date beyond the end of 2026
Grok is developed by xAI, which has been reorganized under SpaceX. Describing it simply as a SpaceX product misses that corporate distinction, though the structure is not exactly designed for casual clarity.
The absence of production information does not prove that the film cannot happen. It does mean Musk has announced a deadline rather than presented a working movie plan.
Can Grok Imagine produce a full-length movie?
The technical gap is substantial. xAI currently markets Grok Imagine as a tool for generating individual video clips, not as an autonomous system capable of producing a coherent feature.
According to xAI’s documentation, Grok Imagine creates clips of no more than 15 seconds at either 480p or 720p resolution. A two-hour film assembled at that maximum length would require at least 480 separate clips, even before accounting for alternate takes, transitions, continuity errors and editing. In practice, the number would likely reach into the thousands.
Maintaining the same faces, costumes, locations, lighting and performances across those shots would be another challenge. So would controlling pacing and preserving a consistent visual language across an epic filled with gods, storms, monsters and transformations. Cinema remains inconveniently labor-intensive.
The Daily Beast reported that Grok itself assessed the project as having “low odds” of delivering a feature-length, historically accurate adaptation by December 31, 2026. That judgment is not independent technical analysis, but it does underline the difference between generating an impressive short sequence and completing a releasable film.
What would a historically accurate Odyssey mean?
Musk’s promise also runs into a more basic problem: The Odyssey is not a conventional historical record.
Classics scholar Christopher Mackie told ABC that Homer’s poem circulated around the eighth or seventh century BC. Its story may preserve traces of older traditions connected to the Bronze Age, but scholars continue to debate how its people, places and events relate to any specific historical period.
Then there are the gods, the Cyclops, Circe’s transformations, the Laestrygonians and the journey to the underworld. A filmmaker can recreate clothing, weapons, ships or architecture using archaeological research. Literal historical accuracy becomes harder to define once Poseidon starts personally obstructing the voyage home.
Musk previously criticized Nolan’s adaptation over the casting of Lupita Nyong’o, accusing the filmmaker of “desecrating” the poem, according to Le Monde. That criticism reflects one definition of fidelity centered on physical reconstruction and casting. Nolan has described a different goal, telling the Los Angeles Times that he chose contemporary dialogue intended to carry “emotional not intellectual meaning.”
The disagreement is therefore not only about technology. It concerns whether adaptation should reconstruct a disputed ancient setting or make the emotional experience legible to a modern audience.
Nolan’s film gives Musk a difficult comparison
Nolan’s The Odyssey arrived with enormous expectations and a reported production budget of $250 million. The Associated Press estimated that it earned $264.1 million worldwide at launch, including $124.5 million in North America and $139.6 million overseas. AP also reported a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score, while some fifth-week screenings had already sold out in advance.
The production has drawn attention for avoiding computer-generated imagery where possible. Reports highlighted a puppet Cyclops, animatronic pigs and physically staged creatures and performers. Samantha Morton, discussing Circe’s transformation sequence, put the point plainly: “That’s not CGI.”
That practical approach has not protected the movie from criticism. Some viewers objected to clothing choices, including Agamemnon’s costume, while others challenged the casting. Yet the strong opening suggests that audiences responded to the film as an experience, not merely as an archaeological reconstruction.
Musk’s proposed version would face a different test. It would need to show that generative video can sustain characters and emotion over feature length, not just produce striking fragments. It would also have to explain which historical period it considers authoritative for a poem shaped by myth, oral tradition and centuries of interpretation.
For now, Nolan has a film in cinemas and Musk has a public promise. Whether Grok Imagine can close that distance before 2027 is the part of the story that matters.
