The 2026 F1 Hungarian Grand Prix weather forecast gives teams two possible problems for Sunday, July 26: a late-moving storm and track temperatures near 50°C. Rain remains possible around the 15:00 start in Budapest, but the stronger strategic threat may be heat severe enough to punish the softest tyres in Pirelli’s range.

Forecasts published on July 21 and 22 disagree on the precise rain risk, particularly for Friday practice. They broadly agree on the more useful point: most of the weekend should stay dry, and any heavier Sunday rain is more likely to arrive after the chequered flag.

Will rain disrupt practice at the Hungaroring?

RacingNews365 identified the opening Friday practice session as the period most exposed to rain. Its forecast tracked a scattered storm system moving down through continental Europe and passing east of Budapest, with the greatest effects expected across eastern Hungary, Moldova, Ukraine, Poland and Romania.

Under that scenario, the system would move away before Friday afternoon’s second practice session. Saturday would then have a zero percent chance of rain.

Other forecasts are notably less concerned. Formula1.com expects Friday and Saturday to remain dry, assigning a zero percent rain probability to both days. Atlassian Williams F1 Team also projects a largely dry opening, putting the precipitation risk below 5% on Friday and Saturday.

The disagreement means teams will still monitor conditions closely during Friday’s first running. A wet or interrupted session would reduce the time available to understand tyre wear under representative heat, potentially leaving engineers with less useful data for Sunday. The forecasts agree only up to a point, which is weather forecasting performing to specification.

Wind direction will also change during the weekend. Friday’s north-westerly breeze should produce a headwind into Turn 1. On Saturday, the wind is forecast to swing south-westerly, creating a tailwind into Turn 4. That south-westerly direction is expected to continue for the race.

How likely is rain during Sunday’s race?

A separate storm system is forecast to move east across southern Europe after arriving from the Atlantic. RacingNews365 expects it to approach Hungary on Sunday, although at the scheduled start it may still be over northern Italy, Croatia, Slovenia and southern Austria.

That forecast puts the chance of rain at approximately 17% when the race begins. The probability then rises toward 50% by midnight and into Monday morning, suggesting the worst conditions could affect equipment packing rather than the 70-lap Grand Prix.

Williams offers a similar estimate, assigning Sunday a 15% precipitation risk. Formula1.com gives a higher headline figure of 40% after 15:00, but it also expects most of the rain to arrive after the race. Despite the numerical spread, all three outlooks leave open the same plausible result: threatening skies, considerable uncertainty and limited disruption while the cars are actually competing.

Timing will matter more than the daily percentage. Even a short shower at the 4.381-kilometre Hungaroring can sharply alter grip and strategy, especially on a circuit where overtaking is difficult and track position carries substantial value. If the rain waits until evening, teams will face a conventional dry race. If it arrives early, the field could be forced into rapid tyre decisions with little margin for error.

Why heat may matter more than the storm

Formula1.com forecasts air temperatures of up to 29°C on Saturday and 32°C on Sunday. Track temperatures could approach 48°C to 50°C during qualifying and roughly 50°C on race day, making heat the most consistent weather factor across the weekend.

Pirelli is supplying the C3, C4 and C5 compounds, its softest available trio. The company says the Hungaroring regularly produces some of the season’s highest track temperatures. Those conditions can increase rear-tyre thermal degradation and cause graining on softer rubber.

Williams chief trackside engineer Paul Williams said, “Tyre management is critical.” He expects moderate degradation to make a two-stop strategy the likely choice, although a reduction in degradation of around 20% could bring a one-stop race into consideration.

That calculation gives teams a difficult balance. Softer tyres can offer valuable pace and position early in a stint, but sustained heat may shorten their useful life. Harder compounds provide more durability, though they can be slower to warm and may sacrifice immediate performance.

The race covers 306.63 kilometres over 70 laps. Across that distance, repeated thermal stress could shape the result even if no rain falls. Drivers who protect the rear tyres without losing too much lap time may gain more than those waiting for a storm that reaches Budapest after the garages are already being dismantled.
