Syrax flies over Glasgow sounds like the start of a public-safety problem. Instead, commuters looking up on July 21 and 22 found an unusually elaborate promotion for House of the Dragon and the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The remote-controlled replica of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s dragon crossed the sky above the Scottish Event Campus and the Hydro on two consecutive mornings. Several witnesses filmed the flight, including one driver who reported seeing it over the River Clyde at 5:45 a.m. on the way to work.
The early hour helped preserve the surprise. It also meant some viewers had to process a large airborne reptile before breakfast, which seems unnecessarily demanding.
How was the flying Syrax model built?
The dragon was not computer-generated and, more reassuringly, was not alive. German aeronautics company Airstage built the physical model using HBO’s original 3D design for Syrax.
Its specifications explain why footage looked more convincing than the average promotional prop:
- An eight-metre wingspan
- A weight of just 13 kilograms
- A carbon-fibre and aluminium skeleton
- A body made largely from vacuum-formed Depron foam
- Twenty-three moving components controlling the head, tail and wings
- Leg-mounted impellers that provide thrust
A specialist team of 14 people spent nearly 3,000 hours over three months completing the model. TNT Sports described it as the largest flying dragon model ever made.
The wings move for visual effect, but they do not keep Syrax in the air. Impellers concealed in the legs generate the necessary lift and propulsion, while a trained pilot controls the model from the ground.
Airstage pilot Dennis Gutowsky told PA that the experience differs sharply from flying conventional radio-controlled aircraft. “It’s totally different,” he said, adding that operating the dragon requires extensive training.
Why did a dragon fly over Glasgow?
The flights served two promotional purposes for Warner Bros. Discovery. Syrax drew attention to the third season of HBO’s House of the Dragon while also advertising the company’s live coverage of the Commonwealth Games.
The Games began in Glasgow on July 23 and run until August 2. King Charles III and Queen Camilla were due to formally open the event during an 8 p.m. ceremony at the Hydro.
Broadcaster 5 is carrying the opening ceremony live for free-to-air viewers, along with daily highlights. HBO Max and TNT Sports hold the live broadcast rights for the wider competition. The dragon therefore connected a major fantasy series with a new sports package in one highly visible flight.
TNT Sports said the model had already appeared above the Tower of London before travelling north. Electric Sheep Events produced that earlier appearance.
What made the stunt convincing?
The model’s low weight and articulated body allowed it to turn, bank and move its head and tail while airborne. From street level, those movements gave Syrax enough personality to make the sight briefly confusing, particularly for people who had not received the corporate briefing.
PA, Storyful, STV and BBC News all reported sightings above the SEC and Hydro. Storyful dated widely shared footage to July 22, while other reports placed the public flight around sunrise. The exact timing varied between accounts, but the dragon’s presence was considerably less disputed.
Technician Matthias Muthsam said the structure consisted mainly of carbon fibre and foam. The engineering team also drew inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s flying-machine designs, giving the project a lineage that stretches beyond television effects and modern drone technology.
For Gutowsky, the human payoff was not simply making passersby stare upward. He said his favourite part was encouraging young people by showing that “everyone can be an engineer.”
That may be the more lasting achievement of the stunt. The dragon promoted a television drama and a sporting event, but it also put months of design, lightweight construction and specialist piloting directly above a city centre. Viewers came for Syrax. The engineering did the actual flying.
