Ryan Gosling is still running the box office
Ryan Gosling is not just in the conversation, he is basically occupying the whole table. L’ultima missione: Project Hail Mary, in which he plays a science professor tasked with saving the world, stayed at No. 1 in its second weekend with $54.5 million.
That pushes the film’s North American total past $164 million, putting it on track to become one of the year’s biggest earners. Not bad for a movie about a crisis requiring actual science, which is refreshing in a market that often treats logic as optional.
A strong run, and then some
Ten days after release, the film has already outperformed recent blockbusters such as Oppenheimer (2023) and Dune - Parte Due (2024), as well as last year’s hit Sinners-I Peccatori.
Current estimates place the film around $265 million by the end of its run, with the Easter holiday weekend expected to give it another lift. Directed by Oscar winners Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the sci-fi title has also become the most profitable film ever for Amazon MGM Studios, overtaking Creed III, which finished at $156.2 million.
Pixar holds second place
In second place, Jumpers - Un salto tra gli animali, the animated film directed by Daniel Chong for Pixar and Disney, continues its very tidy box-office run. It added more than $12 million over the weekend and has now reached nearly $139 million after four weeks in theaters.
A rough landing for a new horror title
The weekend’s biggest disappointment was Ti uccideranno, the horror-action-comedy written and directed by Kirill Sokolov and starring Heather Graham and Patricia Arquette.
The film opened with just $5 million in the United States and $9 million worldwide, far below the $20 million forecasts. It is an independent production from the Russian company Hype Film, released in North America by Neon and in Italy by Warner Bros.
Elsewhere in the horror aisle, Finché morte non ci separi 2 fell to sixth place.
Bollywood makes a very strong showing
At No. 4 is the Hindi action thriller Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, and R. Madhavan. The film brought in another $5 million, bringing its total to nearly $23 million after its second weekend.
That is a notable milestone: it is now the best North American result ever for a Bollywood film, despite its four-hour runtime and limited release. Apparently audiences were willing to settle in for the long haul.
Rounding out the top five
Closing out the top five is Reminders of Him - La parte migliore di te, the Universal romantic drama starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers. The film earned $4.7 million in its third weekend and has now collected $41 million in the domestic market.
