Macron maps a defensive route to reopen the Straits of Hormuz

During a stop in Cyprus, the French president sketched out a plan for a forthcoming mission that he framed as purely defensive. The aim is to reopen the Straits of Hormuz and escort merchant ships, after the region's hottest fighting phase has cooled, so global trade can sail on without unnecessary turbulence.

He stressed that the goal is to ensure the free circulation of oil and gas through this strategic waterway, underscoring that energy markets keep moving even when geopolitics gets tense.

EU Red Sea commitment

In the same remarks, Macron said France would participate in the long run by contributing two frigates to the European Union led operation that has been patrolling the Red Sea since 2024, a move intended to bolster maritime security in the region.

Note from the newsroom: this is about safeguarding shipping lanes, not grand gestures.
