New studio, familiar name

Jeff Kaplan, the former Overwatch lead, launched an independent studio called Kintsugiyama. Their first project is an open-world action-survival shooter called The Legend of California. If you are curious, you will get a chance to try it soon.

Playtest starts next week

Kintsugiyama has announced a public Steam playtest that begins next week. This will be the first time many players can actually jump in and see how the game plays outside of reveal footage.

What players have already seen

  • Kaplan introduced the project earlier this month with a short reveal video from the studio.
  • The developers followed that with a 10-hour livestream to show more of the game and answer questions.

What’s next

The team left a note in their Q and A about broader testing plans. In their words, “We'99re planning to host a much larger beta this summer, though, so there will be another opportunity to help us test the game before Early Access.” That suggests the next public test will be bigger than this playtest.

Short version: if you want to try what Jeff Kaplan is building post-Blizzard, boot up Steam next week and keep an eye out for the playtest invite. Expect more chances to join later in the summer before the game moves into Early Access.
