Dad on duty: Blue Ivy’s stage glow-up
Jay-Z told GQ that watching his 14-year-old daughter Blue Ivy grow as a performer has been one of the better parts of parenthood. He said she did not just get handed a bigger role on Beyoncé's tours. She earned it.
From guest to principal
Blue Ivy started as a guest dancer on the Renaissance tour and, by 2025, had become a principal dancer on the Cowboy Carter tour. Jay-Z, 56, described the change in a March 24 interview with GQ. He said Blue initially went through the motions, then “started fighting back.” He added, “I saw her fight maybe for the first time in her life, like not everything is just given to her and everything is easy. She fought for it.”
A busy run and a protective dad
The Cowboy Carter tour ran 32 shows around the world, and Blue appeared in multiple segments. Jay said she was nearly on every number and that he sometimes stepped in to protect her from being on stage during certain songs. As he put it, he had to take her off some numbers, joking about not putting her on stage for parts of the show that were not age-appropriate.
Musical chops, on her own terms
Beyond dancing, Jay-Z praised Blue Ivy’s musical talent. He said she is a strong pianist with perfect pitch, but that she resists formal lessons. According to him, she prefers to teach herself and does not want music to feel like a job. “She’s a crazy pianist, but she won’t let us get her a teacher,” he said. “She doesn’t want it to be a job. But she has perfect pitch.”
Family life and pride
Jay-Z also reflected on what being a parent means now that his children are exploring their own talents. He and Beyoncé share three children: Blue Ivy, 14, and 8-year-old twins Rumi and Sir. Jay said watching them pursue their interests adds meaning to his life. He described the small daily things he values, like taking the kids to school and picking them up, and said he will go where he needs to go and get right back on a plane to be there for them.

- Award winner: Shared a BET Award in 2020 for her contribution to the song "Brown Skin Girl."
- Audiobook narrator: In 2020, she narrated the children’s book Hair Love for an audiobook release.

- Called a cultural icon: Legal filings around trademark matters have described Blue Ivy as a cultural icon, reflecting how closely the public follows her life.
Jay-Z’s comments underline two clear things: Blue Ivy is serious about performance, and her parents are proud but hands-on. She pushed for bigger roles, showed she can fight for what she wants, and is building her skills on her own terms. For a teenager, that is a lot of stage time and responsibility, and according to her dad, it makes him very proud.
