If you plan to filch items in Crimson Desert, the first rule is simple: dress the part. You cannot steal or pickpocket unless you have a mask equipped. Without one the steal option stays locked and useless, like a promise you made after too much ale.
Why a mask matters
A mask is required to steal or pickpocket. Equip it from the inventory or toggle it on using the shortcut wheel. Masks make the steal prompt available, but wearing one will make NPCs notice you looking more suspicious. That is the trade off.
How to actually steal
With a mask equipped, point your camera at the item you want and hold the zoom/focus button. On controller that is L1 on PlayStation or LB on Xbox. Hold it while looking at an object to bring up the steal prompt. You can also do this behind someone to take things they are carrying, or after bumping into someone to attempt a pickpocket for small loot like money.
Where to get a mask
Three easy ways to get a mask:
- Buy one from a Back Alley Shop. Grimrak in Hernand is the obvious early option and sells a mask for 10 copper.
- Complete the tutorial bounty for Jeffrey. Pick up the bounty at the Constabulary in the northwest of Hernand, speak with the NPC by the notice, catch and tie up Jeffrey, then return him to collect your reward mask.
- Loot bandits. Masks sometimes drop as loot, so check your inventory after fights before going shopping.
If you are new to Hernand, Grimrak's Back Alley Shop is located a bit southeast of town at the end of the road closest to the river. It is cheap and quick.
Consequences of stealing
Stealing in Crimson Desert is not cost-free.
- Regional EXP loss. Even if nobody sees you, stealing costs regional experience. In our tests the penalty was about 5 EXP for a single item. Larger or more important thefts may carry a higher penalty.
- If you are spotted. A red detection circle appears. If you can leave that circle without being seen by a guard, you avoid further trouble. If you are caught, you will be fined and get a bounty. Refuse to pay and you can end up jailed and charged more.
Where to sell stolen goods
Stolen items cannot be sold to regular traders. You must use a Black Market vendor. Early on Grimrak in Hernand acts as your local fence for stolen items. Later in the game you can also sell to Black Market vendors at Goldleaf Tradeposts.
If you steal an animal, take it to a Livestock Fence instead. You must be carrying or riding the animal to sell it. The earliest Livestock Fence is opposite Grimrak, near the path southeast of Hernand.
Quick practical tips
- Buy a mask early for 10 copper so you are ready when temptation appears.
- Check inventory for masks after combat before traveling to a vendor.
- Steal small things when guards are absent and be prepared to leave the red zone fast if you are seen.
- Only sell stolen goods at Black Market vendors or Livestock Fences for animals.
Stealing is a useful option in Crimson Desert, but it comes with predictable costs. Equip a mask, know the rules, and weigh whether the item is worth the temporary loss of regional EXP and the risk of fines or jail.
