A record-breaking welcome back to the wizarding world
Hogwarts is trending for a reason. The first trailer for the TV reimagining of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone dropped on a Wednesday and pulled in more than 277 million organic views across platforms in the first 48 hours. That makes it the most-watched trailer in HBO and HBO Max history. Yes, seriously.
What the trailer shows (short version)
The preview follows familiar beats from the first book. We see young Harry finally getting answers about his past, meeting the friends who will stick by him, and taking his first steps into the magical school life. Key moments include:
- Harry asking Hagrid about his parents, and Hagrid answering with warmth and conviction
- Harry meeting Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger
- The sorting hat ceremony
- A Herbology class scene
- Harry playing Quidditch in Gryffindor colors
One of the trailer lines captures the emotional core: "I’ve always wanted to know about my parents," Harry says. Hagrid replies, "Your parents were the kindest, bravest people I have ever met. They were funny and clever and they stood up for what they believed was right. The next time I see you will be at Hogwarts." It lands, and yes, the trailer knows it.
The plan and the pitch
The first season will follow J.K. Rowling’s original Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The show is billed as a multiseason series, with each season expected to adapt a different book from the seven-part saga. The official logline sums it up: a seemingly ordinary boy turns eleven, receives admission to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and discovers a hidden world of friendship, magic, and danger tied to a foe from his past.
Who’s in the cast
- Nick Frost as Hagrid
- Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley
- Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger
- John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
- Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
- Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
- Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom
- Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy
- Bel Powley as Aunt Petunia
The trailer also nods to the franchise’s legacy while introducing these new faces.
Creative team and release window
Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, is the showrunner. Mark Mylod, who has directed episodes of Game of Thrones, will direct several episodes. The series premieres at Christmas 2026 on HBO and will stream exclusively on HBO Max.
Bottom line
The trailer’s huge view count shows there is still serious appetite for Harry Potter, especially when it’s reimagined for TV with a multi-season plan. Whether the series will live up to everyone’s memories is the next big question. For now, HBO has a record-breaking teaser and a lot of people ready to click play again.
