For Call of Duty collectors, the Gilded Ruin camo is less a routine unlock than a test of speed, endurance and willingness to preorder another game. Activision will give uniquely numbered versions to only the first 100,000 eligible players who finish the Season 5 challenge in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 or Warzone.
The competition begins July 23 at noon Pacific, three hours after Season 5 launches at 9 a.m. Pacific. Players can preload the update, but nobody can begin collecting the required currency early. Activision has summarized the philosophy with unusual honesty: “the camo grind waits for no one.”
Those who miss the first 100,000 places will still receive Gilded Ruin. They simply will not get a number documenting exactly how quickly they completed several thousand eliminations.
How do players unlock Gilded Ruin?
Entry requires a digital preorder of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The preorder immediately unlocks the Moonlit Pearl camo for use in Black Ops 7 and Warzone, along with the challenge for Gilded Ruin.
Starting at noon Pacific, 3 p.m. Eastern or 8 p.m. British Summer Time on July 23, players must collect 5,000 Skulls through eliminations. Progress carries across supported modes, so switching between Multiplayer, Endgame, Zombies and Warzone does not reset the total.
Each mode awards a different number of Skulls:
- Warzone: 30 Skulls per player elimination
- Black Ops 7 Multiplayer: 10 Skulls per elimination
- Endgame: 5 Skulls per elimination
- Zombies: 1 Skull per elimination
The first 100,000 people to reach 5,000 Skulls receive a serialized version. Everyone else who completes the requirement gets the standard, non-engraved camo.
Activision also says successful numbered finishers receive both versions, meaning they can equip either the serialized design or the cleaner edition without an engraved rank.
Which mode offers the quickest route?
On a simple eliminations-per-reward calculation, Warzone has the strongest rate. Completing the entire challenge in one mode would require:
- 167 Warzone player eliminations
- 500 Multiplayer eliminations
- 1,000 Endgame eliminations
- 5,000 Zombies eliminations
Warzone therefore awards three times as many Skulls per elimination as standard Multiplayer and six times as many as Endgame. That does not automatically make it the fastest option because match length, player skill and access to targets also matter. Still, the reward structure is likely to push competitive players toward Warzone, at least while serialized places remain available.
Zombies offers the most predictable supply of eliminations but demands the largest raw total. Multiplayer sits between the two, while shared progress lets players combine modes rather than commit to one long route.
The uneven rates add a tactical choice to what is otherwise a very large elimination counter. Apparently, completing the challenge was not considered sufficiently urgent on its own.
What makes the numbered camo different?
Each serialized Gilded Ruin camo displays the owner’s finishing position within the 100,000-player limit. The first player to complete the challenge would receive an engraving reading “No: 000001 of 100,000,” with later finishers assigned progressively higher numbers.
That number does not change the camo’s performance. It gives collectors a permanent record of where they finished, turning an ordinary cosmetic reward into a public ranking. The emotional pull is straightforward: players are not merely unlocking a design, but securing proof that they arrived before the cutoff.
The promotion sits within a much broader Season 5 cosmetic system featuring more than 40 earnable camos. Most of those rewards will remain available without a race attached. Gilded Ruin stands apart because its basic version is guaranteed after completion, while its prestige comes from scarcity.
As of July 22, the challenge has not begun, so there is no completion count or indication of how quickly all 100,000 numbered slots might disappear.
When will the camos work in Modern Warfare 4?
Moonlit Pearl and both versions of Gilded Ruin are universal across Black Ops 7 weapons. They will also become usable on Modern Warfare 4 weapons when that game launches on October 23.
That gives early finishers several months to use the designs in the current games before carrying them into the next release. It also makes the preorder central to both access and timing. Players cannot enter the race without first buying the upcoming title digitally.
Platform availability creates one notable gap. Twisted Voxel reports that Nintendo Switch 2 preorders will not open until August 26, more than a month after the race starts. Buyers relying on that platform therefore cannot compete when the numbered challenge opens, and the available slots may be reduced or gone by the time their preorder window arrives.
For everyone else, the calculation begins July 23: preorder, choose a mode and collect 5,000 Skulls before 100,000 other players do the same. The consolation prize is still the camo. The missing number is what will bother the collectors.
