Epic Games recently announced a major round of cuts and then followed with news that will sting Fortnite fans. On March 24, Epic confirmed it laid off 1,000 employees. Players immediately started asking how this would affect Fortnite, which remains one of the most-played free-to-play shooters around.
Which modes are going and when
Epic said it will remove three Fortnite modes. The schedule looks like this:
- Fortnite Ballistic Removal date: April 16, 2026 (during update 40.20)
- Festival Battle Stage Removal date: April 16, 2026 (during update 40.20)
- Rocket Racing Available until October 2026
What Epic said about the shutdowns
"We built a lot of Fortnite modes, and in some cases we failed to build something awesome enough to attract and retain a large player base. We are going to shut these modes down on the schedules outlined below - we re grateful for everyone who played."
In plain terms, Epic admitted these modes did not keep enough players engaged. That is the official reason for the removals.
What this could mean
Removing content is a common response when development resources are tight. With 1,000 job cuts announced in March, Epic may be narrowing focus to maintain Fortnite core modes and future projects. For players, it means less variety in the short term and the end of some fan-favorite experiences.
If you enjoy Rocket Racing, you have several months to keep playing. Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage, however, will disappear with the 40.20 update on April 16, 2026.
Should players worry?
This does not spell the end for Fortnite. It does mean Epic is trimming parts of the game that did not meet engagement goals. There could be more changes down the road, but for now the big takeaway is the removal schedule and the admission from Epic about low player retention for these modes.
