Kehl steps away, Book steps in

Sebastian Kehl has left his role in Borussia Dortmund's sporting department. He said he feels a strong connection to the club but that the time had come to go in different directions. Dortmund have moved quickly to name his successor.

Who is the new man?

Nils-Ole Book was born in Beckum in 1986. He played professionally for clubs such as Duisburg and Rot Weiss Ahlen. More recently he has been working as sporting director at SV Elversberg.

Why Dortmund chose him

  • Track record: Under Book's leadership, Elversberg rose from the regional league, the fourth division, to the second division.
  • Player development: He helped develop young players while increasing the market value of the squad.
  • Fit with club values: Dortmund executives say his profile matches the club's sporting vision.

Lars Ricken, Dortmund's sporting director general, summed it up: "With Ole Book, we've been able to bring in our ideal candidate for the sporting director position at BVB. Under his leadership, Elversberg made the jump from the regional league to the second division, developed many young talents and increased the squad's value."

Carsten Cramer, Dortmund's chief executive, added: "We are delighted to have signed Ole Book as our new sporting director. Although still young, he already has broad experience in the field. He fits perfectly with our values and what we want to represent at Borussia Dortmund."

What Book says

Book said he is excited about the move: "Borussia Dortmund is one of the biggest clubs in Europe and I am very much looking forward to being part of it. I want to contribute so BVB continues to achieve success. I am eager to share my ideas and convictions and to work with a great team."

His contract runs through 2029. Dortmund expect him to take charge of sporting affairs and help shape the next phase of the club's sporting strategy.

Short version: Kehl leaves, Book arrives with a clear development record and a multi-year deal. No drama, just a new plan.
