Caitlin Clark walked into her first U.S. senior national team game, did the Clark things, and gave herself a B+. Not bad for a night that included 17 points and 12 assists in just 19 minutes during a 110-46 win over Senegal.
The quick recap
This was Clark’s first game since July 15 after a groin issue and a bone bruise kept her out of the rest of the WNBA season. The U.S. team is in San Juan, Puerto Rico for a qualifying tournament ahead of September’s FIBA World Cup. The Americans have already clinched a World Cup spot but are using the tournament as a chance to get competitive minutes and sharpen up.
Numbers and highlights
- Minutes: 19
- Points: 17
- Assists: 12
- Field goals: 4 of 5, and yes, all of those were three-point attempts
- Free throws: 5 of 5
She came off the bench, hit shots, found teammates, and made it look fun. Also fun fact: she’s wearing jersey No. 12, the number Diana Taurasi sported during multiple Olympics. Iconic vibes, very on brand.
What she said
Clark sounded relieved and confident. She said her body has been feeling good and that the mental part is trying not to obsess about it. In short, don’t think about the sore bits, she said. Put in the work and trust it.
On the coaching side, Kara Lawson was practically handing out high-fives in spirit, praising Clark’s offensive dynamism and calling her one of the most exciting playmakers around.
Team context
This roster is an interesting blend. It includes 2024 Olympic gold medalists such as Kahleah Copper, Chelsea Gray, and Kelsey Plum, plus younger names who could be 2028 Olympic hopefuls: Paige Bueckers, Angel Reese, and Clark herself. Clark noted the difference between the Fever era, where a lot rested on her shoulders, and this setup, where talent is everywhere. Her goal here is simple: play fast, push tempo, and do what she does best.
What’s next
The U.S. will finish the Puerto Rico tune-up with games against Puerto Rico, Italy, New Zealand, and Spain. Not everyone on this current roster is guaranteed a World Cup spot; veterans like Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, and A'ja Wilson are expected to rejoin the fold for the summer, shaking up final roster decisions.
So yeah, a B+ from Clark. It feels generous, but after 17 and 12 in under 20 minutes, it also feels earned. The rest of the tournament will tell us more, but for now she looked healthy, confident, and like someone who can change a game with a single pass or step-back three.
