The Avengers: Doomsday trailer asks audiences to accept a familiar face in a far less reassuring role. Robert Downey Jr., who spent more than a decade playing Tony Stark and Iron Man, finally appears in Doctor Doom’s mask as Marvel begins turning his resemblance to its former hero into a central mystery rather than a casting detail everyone should politely ignore.
Disney released the footage after its first screening at CinemaCon in April. The film, directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026, and brings together heroes from the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the Fox-era X-Men.
What does the trailer reveal about Doctor Doom?

“Put aside your petty squabbles. Presume nothing except this: If you return, you will return as brothers and sisters,” Thor says. “Mark my words: We are going to need a miracle.”
The footage shows Downey’s Doom wearing his metal mask, offering the first clear look at the actor in the role. Variety also reported scenes of Thor fighting Doom, Professor X witnessing an incursion and Shang-Chi confronting Gambit.
Another moment brings Chris Evans into the action as Steve Rogers, the original Captain America. Thor responds, “It’s not possible,” when Rogers takes hold of Mjolnir. Marvel previously identified Evans’s returning character as Steve Rogers, making his appearance more than a vague multiverse cameo.
Earlier teasers focused on Letitia Wright’s Black Panther, Hemsworth’s Thor, Evans’s Captain America and James Marsden’s Cyclops. They kept Downey’s return out of sight, although Doctor Doom appeared briefly without showing his face in 2025’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Why does Downey look like Tony Stark?
Downey’s casting as Victor von Doom was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024. The decision marked Marvel’s shift away from its previously planned Kang-centered storyline and immediately raised the obvious question: Why does Doom have Tony Stark’s face?
Joe Russo has said the resemblance “will all make sense” in the film. At CinemaCon, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers also stressed that Downey and Evans are central to the story, not returning solely to produce applause from audiences who remember Avengers: Endgame.
“He’s not simply a villain, he’s one of the most complex Marvel characters,” Joe Russo said at CinemaCon. “He’s always three moves ahead.”
Downey described the reunion as both familiar and unexpected. “I couldn’t have imagined reuniting with this amazing team, let alone as a new character,” he told the crowd.
That distinction matters because Tony Stark’s death gave Endgame its emotional conclusion. Reusing Downey without a story-driven reason would risk weakening that farewell. Making the resemblance part of the plot gives the returning actor something more complicated to play and gives the other characters a personal reason to distrust what they see.
How does the film connect Marvel’s universes?
Marvel’s official synopsis places heroes from three universes on a “deadly collision course.” That makes the fifth Avengers film the first theatrical meeting of the current Marvel Cinematic Universe Avengers, the Fantastic Four and legacy X-Men characters.
The scale is considerable even by Marvel standards. Incursions, which involve universes colliding, provide the mechanism for characters from separate continuities to meet. The trailer’s combination of Professor X, Cyclops, Gambit, Shang-Chi, Black Panther, Thor and Steve Rogers suggests Doom will exploit or accelerate that crisis.
Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay. The Russo brothers return to direct an MCU feature for the first time since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which became the second-highest-grossing film ever released.
The convergence also prepares audiences for Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for December 17, 2027. That sequel is expected to continue the multiverse conflict, making Doomsday less a standalone reunion than the first half of Marvel’s largest crossover plan.
When will tickets go on sale?
Disney moved Avengers: Doomsday from May 1, 2026, to December 18, 2026. Fandango lists the December date but currently offers only notifications for future ticket availability. Social media claims that advance sales begin July 21 have not been confirmed by a reputable outlet.
The release carries substantial weight for Disney, which generated $6.6 billion worldwide from theatrical releases in 2025, according to the Associated Press. Marvel now needs its returning stars to serve the story as effectively as they serve the marketing. Downey’s Doom offers both possibilities, with the mask doing only some of the work.
